Based on a short story by Nobel laureate Alice Munro, HATESHIP LOVESHIP is built around a beautifully understated performance by Kristen Wiig as a Plain Jane with an unexpectedly rich inner life. In a dramatic change-of-pace, Wiig plays Johanna, a drab drudge who works as a housekeeper-for-hire, moving from job to job. Her latest gig is tending to the household of a small-town widower (Nick Nolte) with an estranged prodigal son-in-law (Guy Pearce) and a resentful granddaughter (Hailee Steinfeld of TRUE GRIT). The latter cooks up a nasty scheme that involves tricking Johanna into a bogus email romance, but the prank unleashes a repressed romantic in its victim and, when the egg hits her face, a fighter of steely determination.
